Climbing in video games tends to happen in one of two ways. Either you hold down a button and run off a cliff like in Horizon Zero Dawn, Tomb Raider or Assassin’s Creed, or you go much deeper like in GIRP or Jusant. Peaks of Yore falls into the latter category, as it is a physics-based recreation of what it was like to climb mountains in the 1800s. Already a hit with a 98% rating on Steam, it has been expanded with some new DLC focused on the Alps.

The Great Alps DLC for Peaks of Yore sends you on a train journey to Einvalddalen where your climbing adventure awaits. There you’ll find tons of mountains, rocks, cliffs, boulders and more to scale, with 23 new locations to explore and climb throughout. The mechanics of this simulation game has similarly been expanded, with new hold types to help you get into places you previously couldn’t have attempted.

Even without this DLC, Peaks of Yore is something special. It’s easy to pick up but has an incredibly high skill ceiling, as its physics-based climbing system can be learned and used to become a master rock climber, scaling near-vertical cliffs at blinding speed. Peaks of Yore manages to be both punishing and chill at the same time, giving you plenty of challenges while allowing you to sit back and enjoy the view – either from the top of a mountain or from your cabin.
