Will Florida freshman QB play today against Texas?

Florida football almost pulled off upset courage No. 2 Georgia last week. Can Gators give a similar scare to No. 5 Texas on the road on saturday? Can they finish the job?

For Florida (4-4, 2-3 SEK) to pull it off, it will have to overcome some injuries, including a true freshman superstar quarterback DJ Lagway. The Gators hung with the Bulldogs last week, but Lagway went down with what appeared to be a serious hamstring injury in the first half and did not return.

Lagway was initially feared to be done for his freshman season, but Florida coach Billy Napier gave a positive update on the signal caller on Monday. Lagway has been practicing since then but entered this week with a questionable label on the SEC availability report.

Will Lagway play against Texas? Here’s the latest on the status of Lagway, where Florida is scheduled to play Longhorn on Saturday:

DJ Lagway injury update

ESPN’s Pete Thamel says Lagway “is not expected to contribute significantly today in Texas.” Lagway was limited in practice this week for the Gators and is listed as questionable for Saturday.

The Thamel report suggests Lagway could be available to play, but not at the level he has as a freshman with 1,071 passing yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions as a passer and 37 rushes for 114 yards as a runner.

According to the 247 Sports composite rankingsLagway was the 7th overall pick and the 2nd QB prospect in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Yale transfer Aidan Warner completed 7 of 22 passing for 66 yards and threw the game-clinching interception in relief of Lagway. Warner is expected to start with Lagway out. Graham Mertz, the starter for the season, is out for the season with a knee injury. Colorado State transfer Clay Millen will back up Warner.
