SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Data now shows Tropical Depression Nineteen has become Tropical Storm Sara.

This late in the season, fall features will play a big role in steering this storm once it develops.

The area will generally move westward through the Caribbean Sea in a favorable area for strengthening. Wind shear remains weak as it moves through a moisture-rich environment.

It is currently difficult to predict what, if any, local impacts will arise from Tropical Storm Sara. But we can consider a number of possibilities. Depending on the possible track, the range of possibilities is large. From sunny skies and windy, to strong winds and heavy rain. Given this range, it’s important to stay updated on the forecast as we approach the weekend. It’s just too early to know.

Forecast models suggest that Sara will initially spend a lot of time near the coast of Honduras and Nicaragua. The high mountains in these areas can significantly influence the cyclone’s development, although the extent of this influence is uncertain. Some models also predict that the system may also pass over the Yucatán Peninsula before emerging into Gulf waters. Again, any effects of land interactions on storm strength or track are unclear, leading to a low-confidence long-term forecast.

The cyclone is likely to be controlled by a trough of low pressure and strong upper-level steering winds that would lead it northeast. However, it is uncertain where or when it will interact with these winds, making it difficult to determine the timing or effects on Florida.
