Narendra Modi was a booth worker for the BJP before he rose to become the Chief Minister and then the Prime Minister. On Saturday, in his final message to party workers in the Maharashtra campaign before he leaves for an official tour abroad, PM Modi offered valuable pointers from his experience on the ground.

Terming BJP workers as “Modi’s ambassadors”, the prime minister asked them to record videos on mobile phones of the beneficiaries of government schemes and “make them viral” on social media as such video endorsements by the actual beneficiaries work much better. He also told BJP workers not to go as a ‘jaloos’ (procession) to the houses and only hand over a pamphlet to people who are in a hurry while asking them to vote for the BJP.

“Don’t rest…go and sit inside the house with a family and understand their mind carefully. The aim must be to get them to vote in our favor and make sure they vote (vote parivartit karna aur matdaan karvana),” Modi said.

The Prime Minister asked the workers not to argue with people but patiently talk to them and advised them to “vivaad nahi karna hai, samvad karna hai (we don’t need to argue but have a conversation)”. He also advised assemblers to take an influential person along – like a doctor, teacher or a saint – as people can listen to them more there,” the Prime Minister said. Modi also advised making a list of people who might plan to travel on election day – and they must be persuaded to vote early in the day and then depart for their journey.

The prime minister also recalled his own days as booth workers and advised them to ensure “utsav ka mahaul” (celebration) on polling day and take out small processions playing instruments to encourage people to come out and vote and help them reach the polling booths. He said that people see BJP workers as “Modi’s ambassadors” because they feel that what they say to the workers will reach the Prime Minister.

“Make sure you have women in your group. I depend on you for ground feedback… keep the talking points ready on your phone when you meet people. Talk to them about local and national issues,” Modi told BJP workers.
