Netflix ‘spoils’ the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight; users threaten streamer

In an exciting twist, Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson by unanimous decision in their eight-round heavyweight bout. The fight, which lasted a total of about 24 minutes, was highly anticipated by viewers worldwide and Netflix had the streaming rights to the exclusive.

But in a crushing failure of expectations, the streaming service faced repeated buffering and multiple crashes that led to widespread viewer disappointment.

Several subscribers to Netflix expressed his anger on X (formerly Twitter), and threatened to suspend his services entirely for the bad experience. As mentioned online, the stream was lagging or freezing at the buffer screen for long periods and during some of the most crucial periods of the match.

Nor did the problems remain confined to one region as India reported over 1,310 outages at a peak while the US faced over 95,000 at its peak, according to Downdetector. Also, when some users couldn’t get past the buffer screen, others couldn’t log in.

Reactions on social media did not spare Netflix, the world’s largest streaming service provider, as complaints flooded its comments section.

“$35 billion in revenue per year and your platform doesn’t even work???” wrote one user while others lashed out with comments and declarations such as “I’m canceling Netflix,” “One of the worst streams ever,” and “Just ended my Netflix subscription and won’t be going back.”

With millions of subscribers spread across the globe and with an expectedly long queue to watch Mike Tyson compared to Jake Paul, it seems Netflix’s servers couldn’t handle the load and that’s why the problem broke out.

Viewers also pointed out that given the high expectations, the streamer should have been better prepared for such a scenario given its comparatively higher subscription cost.
