Shriya Pilgaonkar talks about her OTT success this year with The Broken News 2 and Taaza Khabar 2, and being stuck with the medium’s label

On the digital medium, actor Shriya Pilgaonkar has had double the success with two sequels to her show that hit the internet and got love—The Broken News Season 2 and Taaza Khabar season 2. The latter came out just over a month ago and the actor feels that “its success feels like a commercial film success in terms of how much love people have given it”.

While proud of her work on OTT, Shriya Pilgaonkar insists that she is classified as an OTT actor because of it. She says: “The film industry is quick to box you in. I don’t think people make an effort to think creatively about what they can do with you as an artist, so somewhere we as actors take the responsibility to somewhere spoon feed people what we are capable of .Many times I realize that in interviews people present me as an OTT actor, but I feel that these labels are not very important at the end of the day.”

The actor adds, “I think as an artist today, both credibility and fairness are important in showbiz. If people talk about me as a credible actor, that’s important. But I think there has to be a balance.” But Shriya admits that even the treatment of projects differs according to the medium: “I notice a difference in making a hit OTT series versus making a hit film. Perception still makes a big difference. It’s still very different because of how the PR or editing of films is done.”

Shriya admits that most of her projects releasing on OTT have been a fluke. “Most times, you don’t necessarily know if your film is going to be theatrical or if it’s going to be on OTT. In the last five years, the industry has gone through its own journey. Some of the biggest films haven’t worked or haven’t taken off. So my priority in selecting work has been based on a script and otherwise, the scripts that I’ve liked have been on streaming platforms,” she says, adding, “But also on OTT, as I’ve done more series format, for me it’s important to balance that with movies, even if it’s not theatrical.”
