Vehicle preparations for upcoming winter weather driving

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – It won’t be long before snow and ice are a constant challenge for drivers in the region. While it may be obvious to some, getting your car ready for winter is important to save money and stay safe.

“If you haven’t gotten your vehicle in yet to get it ready for the coming winter, now is the time to do so,” AAA spokesman Shawn Steward said.

Steward says there are a number of items on the checklist to go through. It could be to check your vehicle’s battery and replace it if necessary. Tires are also large and affect how your vehicle interacts with slippery and wet roads.

“Tires are also very important. Make sure you have good tread on your tires because that will give you traction on wet and snowy roads. Also, pay attention to the air pressure in those tires. Make sure they are properly vented,” Steward said.

Other steps include checking and making sure your lights are working so other drivers can see you, having a complete emergency kit that is up to date with survival essentials and checking fluid levels such as wiper fluid, coolant and antifreeze.

“Make sure it’s been updated in the last year or two. It’ll protect your engine in the coldest months,” says Steward.

All of this, Steward said, is for your safety. And none of this will help unless drivers slow down and take their time in poor road conditions.

“Obviously driving on the slippery stuff, it challenges our vehicles, and it can also be a safety issue. When you’re out driving on snow and ice, the most important thing to remember is to take it slow. Slow down, and then just give yourself extra space for pretty much everything you do, Steward said.

Steward said if there is any chance of rain, sleet or snow in the forecast, drivers should monitor road conditions as on SD511. That way, they know what the roads will look like before they even get behind the wheel.
