Sanbornton interstate reopens after crash, gas leak

SANBORNTON — A pickup truck towing a mobile home overturned on Interstate 93 late last night, causing a two-hour shutdown while emergency crews secured the scene, including containing a leaking LPG cylinder.

Sanbornton Fire & Rescue responded to the incident at mile marker 61.4 around 7:41 p.m. after receiving reports of a motor vehicle crash.

The overturned RV blocked both southbound lanes, causing heavy traffic that stretched for about a mile from the crash site.

The driver of the pickup truck was found unharmed and walking around the scene.

But during the response, firefighters discovered two 40-pound LPG cylinders that had been thrown 75 feet from the mobile home.

One of the cylinders was damaged and leaking.

Emergency personnel were able to secure the gas cylinders and avert potential danger.

The New Hampton First Responders Association was called in to shut down the freeway at Exit 23, preventing additional southbound traffic from entering the freeway.

The closure remained in effect until the truck and RV were safely removed by New Hampton Towing and Rusty’s Towing.

The Sanbornton and New Hampton police departments provided assistance at the scene, while the New Hampshire State Police conducted an investigation into the crash.

Additional off-duty personnel were asked to man the Central Fire Station during the incident.

By 9:50 p.m., all companies had returned to traffic and the road was reopened to traffic.
