‘Harry Potter’ props sell for record sum; Money will go towards the care of Daniel Radcliffe’s injured stunt double

The Marauder’s Map was owned by David Holmes, Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double, and proceeds will help with his ongoing medical expenses

Marauder’s map is sold!

The iconic map introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban — the third film in the series — sold for $299,250 at Propstore’s Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction. The sale on Thursday, November 14 makes the map the most expensive prop ever sold from Harry Potter franchise.

“This auction has been particularly meaningful, with David Holmes (Daniel Radcliffes stunt double) joining us in the room to introduce the incredible Marauder’s Map,” wrote Stephen Lane, founder and CEO of Propstore.

Before the auction, Holmes owned the map. A stunt double in everyone Harry Potter films he suffered a serious injury while making the 2010s Deathly Hallows: Part 1, and is now paralyzed and uses a wheelchair to get around. Proceeds from the sale of the map will go towards his mobility equipment and personal care.

The stuntman was the subject of the 2023 HBO documentary David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, produced by Radcliffe, who is also a childhood friend.

“I’ve wanted to do something about Dave for years because he’s extraordinary and I wanted to share that with the world,” Radcliffe told PEOPLE at the time.

In the third Harry Potter movie, Fred and George Weasley — played by James and Oliver Phelps — present the Marauder’s Map to Harry Potter, played by Radcliffe. The magical piece of parchment shows a vivid account of people moving throughout Hogwarts school, and can hide its contents with a wave of a wand and a ‘battle handled’.

Other props sold at Thursday’s auction included a Sandtrooper helmet from Star Wars: A New Hope and Ray Harryhausen’s Kali Model from Sinbad’s Golden Voyage. They sold for $409,500 and $236,250 respectively.

Thursday was the auction’s first day of four, raising $6.8 million. Propstore estimates that more than 1,800 items from other iconic films, TV shows and personal collections of music stars will be sold during the auction. The live auction will be held at BAFTA in London, as well as online and by phone for global bidding.
