Propane truck overturns in Bowdoin

BOWDOIN, (WGME) — A propane truck rolled over in the town of Bowdoin on Friday. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office says it happened on Dead River Road, near the intersection of Academy Road.

Police say the driver, 65-year-old Michael Gowell of Litchfield, climbed out of the truck unharmed. The road was then closed. The Sagadahoc County Emergency Management Agency sent out a “RAVE” public notice about the closure.

Police say the truck’s right rear wheel ran onto the shoulder. Gowell reportedly swerved and tipped the truck onto its side. The truck “sustained significant damage,” but no propane leaked.

“G&G Cash Fuel,” a Litchfield-based company, owned the 2006 Freightliner truck.

Deputy Chad Carleton of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office is reportedly investigating the crash, with assistance from the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unity. Maine DEP Hazmat also arrived to ensure no propane had escaped into the surrounding environment.

Police say AC Towing of West Gardiner righted the truck and towed it away.

Dead River Road was closed for about four hours.
