Every night you look into your lover’s eyes and ask, “Will no older media tell me what the best movies are on Hulu?” Fortunately, Vanity Fair is here for you. A glance at the platform’s A to Z list reveals that there are almost too many great movies on Hulu to choose from, and figuring out which one to choose can be overwhelming.

After a deep dive into the Hulu archives (the Hu chives?), we’ve selected a top mix of classics, comedies, dramas, horror flicks, documentaries and, importantly, some titles that were overlooked upon their initial release. Our list is in alphabetical order, so you have to scroll near the bottom to get to The Wizard of Oz. Hu love you?

A Glitch in the Matrix (2021)

Director: Rodney Ascher
Genre: Documentary
Remarkable actor: Keanu Reeves (archive), Elon Musk (archive), Philip K. Dick (archive)
MPA rating: Not classified
Rotten tomatoes: 66%
Metacritic: 62

A gem waiting to be rediscovered, this insightful analysis of individuals convinced we live in a simulation is either an eerie discovery of madness or the most important documentary you’ll ever see…for everything is true. Rodney Ascher, whose previous work includes Brilliant-obsessed Room 237, uses The matrix as a point of contact for this (expanding?) syndrome, and interviews its subjects virtually using gaming avatars. Aliens (1979)

Director: Ridley Scott
Genre: Sci Fi/Horror
Remarkable actor: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerrit, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright
MPA rating:R
Rotten tomatoes: 93%
Metacritic: 89

The original and still the best. A story of haunted houses, a workplace drama and a mystery filled with twists – all set in outer space. Sigourney Weavers rocket to superstardom began here when she played the biggest interplanetary last girland John Hurts legendary stomach ache was a milestone for practical special effects. Several (not all!) of the sequels and prequels to this movie are good, but no matter how many times you’ve seen Foreignyou will always find something new in it.

Beyond the Lights (2014)

Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood
Genre: Romantic drama
Remarkable actor: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker, Minnie Driver
MPA rating: PG-13
Rotten tomatoes: 83%
Metacritic: 73

A classic showbiz romance updated for today (or 2014, but that’s close enough), with Gugu Mbatha-Raw as an R&B/pop sensation caught up in fame and Nate Parker as the hunky security guard/aspiring politician who first saves her life and then takes her heart. This is glossy soap opera at its best, with an extended sequence at a beach hideout that might make you pause and head to Travelocity. One of the better romantic movies to watch on Hulu.

Blackberry (2023)

Director: Matt Johnson
Genre: Comedy
Remarkable actor: Jay Baruchel, Glenn Howerton, Michael Ironside

Rotten tomatoes: 97%
Metacritic: 78

Canadian indietrogen Matt Johnsoncreator of great mock documentaries like The Dirties, Operation Avalanche and Nirvana the Band the Showtackles the rise and fall of the once ubiquitous tech gadget in this hilarious boardroom comedy. Jay Baruchel is particularly spectacular as a brilliant and creative inventor torn between his desire for perfection and Glenn Howertonpp increasingly antique hunting for money. Research shows that there is much that has been fictionalized here, but that essence of IPO bubbles remain frank.
