Bose is bringing back its most iconic speakers, but there’s a catch

Turning 60 is a pretty big milestone for any company. Bose is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee by bringing back its iconic 901 speakers. But if you were hoping to get your hands on a pair of these wonderful pieces of audio history in your living room, it probably won’t happen.

In short Instagram postsBose revealed that it was bringing back the classic speakers: the Bose 901, released in 1968. Bose partnered with NYC lifestyle brand Kith and world-renowned furniture designer Mark Jupiter to help redesign the speaker. This is not the first time Bose and Kith have worked together. You may remember these “extremely limited edition” and good-looking Bose Ultra Open headphones.

As with many design collaborations, the 901 speaker is a limited edition. Bose actually means “limited” because it only produces 12 units. It also says in its Instagram post that these are “custom, keepsake sets (…) exclusively for our friends and family.”

Rightfully so, this put off a number of customers. The comments section is flooded with complaints about their limited supply with comments like “This is worthless if they only make 12” or “This must be a regular production model.”

Kith founder Ronnie Fieg says, “If you’re half as particular about music and how it sounds as I am, you know the importance of the Bose 901 speakers. Since its debut in 1968, this speaker has stood as a pinnacle of audio engineering.”

The 901 speakers have one full-range driver in the front and eight in the back, covered with tweed front grills and metal rear grills. The speaker cabinet is made of MDF wood and rests on a beautiful stand, one of the speaker’s most iconic parts.

Bose hasn’t revealed much about the 901’s specs or pricing. It is currently unclear if a non-limited edition will ever be made available to the rest of the public. All we know is that they have been “refurbished” in two finishes: whitewashed ash wood and natural air-dried walnut.

When Bose releases a successful product, you can expect it to soon follow up with an extravagant limited edition version. We recently saw a diamond-encrusted version of the Ultra Open Earbuds that were way too flashy for my co-workers, but I secretly thought the $9,000 knobs were awesome.
