Whoopi Goldberg is defending the claim that the bakery refused service after backlash

  • Whoopi Goldberg is doubling down on her claim that a bakery refused to make the sweets she tried to order for her birthday
  • “It seems a little strange that when we called a few weeks before my birthday and we were told they couldn’t process the order for my birthday due to an equipment failure,” she said in the follow-up video. “But somehow they were able to accept an order for another 48 of the same dessert when someone else called without using my name”
  • In the end, she didn’t let the incident ruin her special day. “It’s okay, you guys, because I enjoyed my delicious dessert and I had a happy, sweet birthday,” she said, adding: “Nothing better than that”

Whoopi Goldberg double her claim that a bakery refused to make the sweets she tried to order for her birthday.

“There seems to be a lot of talk about the dessert I requested for my birthday show,” the TV personality captioned an Instagram video posted on Thursday, Nov. 14.

The day before, Goldberg celebrated his 69th birthday The view with a tray of Charlotte Russe desserts and said the bakery turned down her first order probably because of her “politics”. While Sister act the star did not name the company, Entertainment Weekly identified the establishment as Holtermann’s Bakery in Staten Island and quoted its owner as denying Goldberg’s claim.

“It seems a little strange that when we called a few weeks before my birthday and we were told they couldn’t process the order for my birthday due to an equipment failure,” she said in the follow-up video. “But somehow they were able to accept an order for another 48 of the same dessert when someone else called without using my name.”

However, she didn’t let the incident ruin her special day.

“It’s okay, you guys, because I enjoyed my delicious dessert and I had a happy, sweet birthday,” she said. “Nothing better than that.”

On The view On Wednesday, Goldberg shared that the Charlotte Russe — which includes layers of sponge cake, Bavarian cream and fruit — was one of her mom’s favorites.

“Now I’ll tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me,” she continued.

Co-host Sunny Hostin asked, “Oh, really?” and Sara Haines quickly spat out her chew, drawing laughter from the audience.

“They said their furnaces had gone out, all kinds of stuff, but people went and got them anyway,” Goldberg said, adding, “that’s why I’m not telling you who made them.”

She then suggested: “It can’t be because I’m a woman, but maybe they didn’t like my politics.”

“But it’s okay,” Goldberg said, “because you know what? Listen, this is my mom’s celebration. Pick these up and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you all for celebrating my birthday today.”

Holtermann’s bakery owner Jill Holtermann said EW that “it was not because of political” affiliations, but rather because “we had trouble with our boilers.”

Holtermann said Goldberg had requested the dessert for a Nov. 6 talk show appearance and for her birthday show, both of which the baker declined because she “didn’t want to make a commitment I can’t fulfill.”

“I told Whoopi, ‘I can’t do it right now,'” she continued. “We have so many things going on with my pan,” because the building is from 1930, so when she called me, I had no idea (if we could) bake everything.”

Holtermann confirmed Goldberg’s claim that a woman, whom neither identified, picked up about 50 Charlotte Russe desserts on the morning of November 13, which she said she was able to do despite the boiler problems.

She also told the outlet that she was not aware that the customer was connected to Goldberg or The view.

PEOPLE reached out to Holtermann’s bakery and to The view for further comment, but did not hear directly from either of them.
