Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid told fans he will not take over for injured kicker Harrison Butker despite his past success as an emergency preseason kicker.

He thanked the fans for their “trust”.

Our new kicker will handle all the kicking responsibilities guys but I appreciate the vote of confidence!

In 2022, Reid was called up to kick an extra point when Butker was injured during a preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

After reports came out Thursday that Butker was headed to injured reserve with a knee injury, fans were quick to remember Reid’s history as a kicker.

Reid according to information was designated to serve as an emergency kicker while playing at Stanford, and Chiefs assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Dave Toub said in May that Kansas City had considered using Reid on some kicks this season to protect Butker from tackles.

Just casually started my campaign for the Justin Reid kick… never mind me https://t.co/ph97kjNzz9

ESPN’s Adam Schefter (h/t Adam Teicher) reported Thursday that the Chiefs signed kicker Spencer Shrader from the New York Jets’ practice squad. It sounds like it will be Shrader, and not Reid, who gets called for the extra point attempt when the Chiefs return to action with a Sunday game against the Buffalo Bills.

Butker, meanwhile, is expected to return in time for “the home stretch and the playoffs” after undergoing surgery on his left knee, according to NFL Networks Ian Rapoport.
