STARKVILLE, Miss.—An egg bowl tradition continues Sunday (Nov. 24) when Mississippi State University and University of Mississippi Army ROTC cadets team up for the 12th annual Egg Bowl Run.

Army ROTC cadets will depart MSU’s campus at 2:30 p.m. MSU cadets and carry a football from Starkville to Calhoun City, where they will hand it off to UM cadets for the second leg of the 100-mile run to Oxford. The transfer of the ball will take place at approximately 1pm at Calhoun City Square.

MSU cadets will carry several ceremonial footballs on the nine-hour run of more than 50 miles. They will then present one football to the city of Calhoun, keep one in Starkville and present another to UM cadets.

Maj. Stephen Scott, professor of military science and head of the Department of Military Science at MSU, said the Egg Bowl rivalry extends beyond the football field. This year’s competition will feature a tug-of-war contest and a Calhoun City eating contest — both of which Scott expects MSU to win.

“Over the years, the race has grown to include counterparts from our sister ROTC programs, MSU Air Force and UM Air Force and Navy, while highlighting the community’s gratitude as we join Calhoun City,” Scott said. “The school rivalry serves as reason enough for our cadets as they coordinate between the MSU Army and Air Force programs to ensure we beat Ole Miss in every aspect of the event.”

Food drive donations can be dropped off at MSU’s Army ROTC headquarters in Middleton Hall and at the Sanderson Recreation Center. The Will for Calhoun County Food Pantry distributes food to those in need.

The Bulldogs and Rebels will meet in the Egg Bowl on Friday, Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving at 2:30 p.m. in Oxford. The game will be televised on ABC.
