Kelly Clarkson reimagines Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” as a sleazy country tune for Kellyoke

The 42-year-old Grammy winner performed a cover of Sabrina Carpenters “Please Please Please” under Kellyoke segment of her NBC talk show on Nov. 13, reimagines the chart-topping hit as a crooning country song inspired by Dolly Parton.

“It was ‘Please Please Please’ by Sabrina Carpenter. It’s her first No. 1 single on Notice board Hot 100, which I thought was shocking,” Clarkson said after singing the song with her band at the top of the episode. “I thought she would have had others, but I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s incredible!’

The “Miss Independent” singer then explained the idea behind her country version of the song, produced by Jack Antonoff. “Ever since I heard this song, for some reason I’ve also heard Dolly Parton sing it,” she said.

“For some reason it lends itself to country to me, so I asked my band if we could do more of a country version of it, because we already have the great pop version,” added Clarkson.

“But I love that song, and I love when a song is so good that you can go into different genres with it,” she said. “But thank you, Sabrina, for that song, and thank you for letting me sing it.”

Released in June as second single off Short n’ SweetCarpenter’s latest album, “Please Please Please” quickly reached No. 1 on it Notice board Hot 100. The song followed “Espresso”, which peaked at number 3 on the chart.

Earlier this month, “Please Please Please” received a Grammy Award nomination for Song of the Year.

Shortly after the initial release, Carpenter’s longtime friend Joey King spoke with PEOPLE about her love for the song. “I’m so happy for her and I just can’t stop singing ‘Please Please Please’ … out of my head,” the actress said.

“It’s so rude of her to make a hit like that. It’s also so rude to make such an addictive music video,” she continues, referring to music video the main role Barry Keoghan. “It’s really rude to make me watch it six times at 2am when I want to go to bed.”
