Sophie Turner to play Lara Croft in ‘Tomb Raider’ Amazon series

Sophie Turner is almost ready for the lead role in Amazonis coming”Tomb Raider“TV series, Amount have confirmed with sources.

Sources say the deal isn’t completely closed yet but is expected to close soon. Turner will star as Lara Croft, the titular tomb raider. The show was green light at Amazon earlier this year with Phoebe Waller-Bridge set to write and produce under her Amazon-wide deal. It was first reported to be in development on the streamer in January 2023.

Representatives for Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment.

Turner is the latest high-profile actress to take on the role of Croft, which originated in the popular “Tomb Raider” video game series. The globe-trotting adventurer has previously been portrayed on screen in two films by Angelina Jolie and in another by Alicia Vikander.

Turner is best known for playing Sansa Stark on the HBO series “Game of Thrones” throughout the show’s eight seasons. She received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for the show in 2019. She is also known for her role as Jean Gray in the later Fox X-Men films, namely “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “X-Men “ : Dark Phoenix.” She most recently starred in the ITV/CW miniseries “Joan” and the Max limited series “The Staircase”.

She is repped by CAA, Independent Talent Group and Hansen Jacobson.

The “Tomb Raider” franchise is being developed under a pact between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios that comes via dj2’s first-look deal with the studio to develop additional “Tomb Raider” stories into series and movies.

The series comes from Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios and Legendary Television. Executive producers include Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins through Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment and Michael Scheel. Amanda Greenblatt and Ryan Andolina are consulting producers under their Star Party banner. The series is produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.
