The Steelers’ $18 million backup could leave Pittsburgh for the division rival

After leading his team to a 4-2 start this season, quarterback Justin Fields was seen as a possible long-term solution for Pittsburgh Steelers below the middle. However, that has changed in recent weeks.

Once the Steelers inserted quarterback Russell Wilson into the starting lineup, the team has won two straight games and Wilson has proven to be an immediate boost to the team’s passing attack, which has relegated Fields to the bench.

Unless Wilson gets benched or injured and Fields cements himself as the long-term answer in Pittsburgh, chances are he’ll be looking for a spot that gives him a chance to start in 2025.

A potential option for Fields is in the same division. Christopher Knox of Bleacher Report believe the Cleveland Browns could be a suitor for Fields. He also mentions the New York Jets as another potential landing spot.

“Teams looking for a new long-term quarterback — possibly on a budget — like the Browns and Jets could target Fields early in free agency,” Knox wrote.

Both the Browns and Jets are good choices as potential landing spots for Fields.

The Browns have an abominable disaster on their hands in Deshaun Watson, who has been awful since leaving for Cleveland. The Browns have Jameis Winston as insurance for Watson now, but he will be a free agent in 2025.

If Winston leaves, the Browns could have interest in Fields, and the feeling could be mutual given the uncertainty surrounding Watson’s job going forward.

As for the Jets, quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ future is up in the air. Rodgers has a year left on his contract, but he will also turn 41 in December, so it’s possible he could retire at the end of the season. Fields would offer a strong stop option.
