Crown Prince Haakon “cancels engagement to accompany scandal-ridden stepson to rehab in London” – which Crown Princess Mette Marit fills in after sick leave

Crown Prince Haakon of Norway canceled an engagement to accompany his stepson to rehab, according to local media.

The heir to the Norwegian throne, 51, left his wife, Crown Princess Mette Marit, to host the state administrators’ lunch on Thursday, with Palace communications director Guri Varple citing “private reasons” for the king’s absence.

However, See and Hor reported a sighting of the king boarding a flight from Gardermoen to London at 1 p.m. with Marius Borg Høiby, 27, who should now have been interrogated.

Marius admitted to assaulting Rebecca Helberg Arntsen, who was believed to be his girlfriend at the time, in a booze-and-drugs attack last summer, in a case that rocked the Norwegian royal family.

The publication claimed the trip was made to accompany Marius to rehab after Marius’ defender Øivind Bratlien, 44, said in October that the 27-year-old planned to start rehab in a new future.

In a statement from his own lawyer last month, Borg Høiby said he suffers from “multiple mental disorders” and has “struggled with substance abuse for a long time”, for which he said he is resuming treatment.

At the same time, medical personnel declared Mette Marit healthy, according to The evening postafter she was on sick leave due to medical side effects related to her chronic lung disease.

The Crown Princess’ health condition was first made public in 2018, when it was revealed that Mette-Marit had been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, or thickening of lung tissue.

At the time, Mette-Marit issued a statement explaining that the condition “means that my ability to work will vary” to accommodate her treatment including “periods without an official program”.

“For a number of years I have regularly had health problems and now we know more about what is involved,” said the mother-of-three. – The condition means that my ability to work will vary.

“The Crown Prince and I are choosing to make this public now in part because in the future there will be a need to plan for periods of time without an official program of treatment and when the disease is more active.”

Pulmonary fibrosis is incurable and worsens over time, but the Norwegian royal doctor, Professor Kristian Bjøro at Rikshospitalet, said they had been monitoring her condition for several years and that “disease progression has been slow during this period”.

Not much is known about the unusual variant of fibrosis that was discovered in Mette-Marit’s lung, but according to the Royal House, there is broad agreement that, unlike other more common types of pulmonary fibrosis, it is not related to environmental or lifestyle factors’.

The fact that the disease was discovered at an early stage improves Mette-Marit’s prognosis, according to the Palace’s official statement.

– Although such a diagnosis will limit my life at times, I am glad that the disease has been detected so early. My goal is still to work and participate in the official program as much as possible, said the mother of three.

According to the NHS, the symptoms of pulmonary fibrosis include shortness of breath, loss of appetite and weight loss, extreme fatigue, a persistent dry cough and swollen fingertips.

WHAT IS PULMONARY FIBROSIS?

Pulmonary fibrosis is a condition where the lungs become scarred and breathing becomes increasingly difficult.

It’s not clear what causes it, but it usually affects people around the age of 70-75 and is rare in people under 50.

Several treatments can help slow the rate at which IPF gets worse, but there is currently no treatment that can stop or reverse the scarring of the lungs.

The symptoms of IPF tend to develop gradually and slowly get worse over time.

Symptoms may include:

  • Respiratory distress
  • A persistent dry cough
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Rounded and swollen fingertips also called clubbed fingers

There is no cure and it is very difficult to predict how long someone with IPF will survive at the time of diagnosis.

Regular monitoring over time can indicate whether it is getting worse quickly or slowly.

Days after the palace announced that Mette-Marit had resumed her treatment for pulmonary fibrosis, suggesting it could affect her schedule, Mette-Marit visited the Nic Waals Institute in Oslo with her husband, Crown Prince Haakon.

On Tuesday 15 October, she also welcomed King Harald, Queen Sonja, Princess Astrid and Haakon Finland’s President and First Lady Alexander Stubb and Suzanne Innes-Stubb to Norway for a state visit.

After the welcome ceremony, the crown prince couple followed the presidential couple to a wreath-laying ceremony at Akershus Fortress in Oslo.

Mette-Marit married Haakon, the heir to the Norwegian throne, in 2001. They share two children, Princess Ingrid Alexanda, 20, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 18.

Mette-Marit’s eldest son, Marius Borg Høiby, is from a previous relationship. Since marrying into the royal family, Marius has been called the “black sheep” of the institution.

Overcoming her health issues for now will no doubt come as a relief to the mother-of-three as she grapples with the sensational outcome of Marius’ arrest on August 4. He later admitted assaulting his “girlfriend” in a booze- and drug-fueled attack that left her in hospital.

He was arrested and held overnight in a jail cell on preliminary charges of causing bodily harm and criminal damage. He faces up to a year in prison if convicted.

After the arrest, Høiby apologized for attacking Rebecca Helberg Arntsen, whom he called his “girlfriend” (her lawyers have refuted this claim) while under the influence of “alcohol and cocaine”.

In a statement from his lawyer, Høiby said he “suffers from serious mental disorders” and has “struggled with addiction for a long time”.

The statement read: ‘I have several mental disorders that have caused me, and still have, challenges throughout my growing up and adult life. I have struggled with addiction for a long time, something I have been in treatment for before.

“Drug use and my diagnoses do not excuse what happened in the apartment at Frogner on the night of Sunday last weekend. I want to take responsibility for what I have done and will explain myself truthfully to the police.’

In the wake of the scandal, the Norwegian palace confirmed that Høiby would not attend Princess Martha Louise’s wedding to self-proclaimed shaman Durek Verett in the Geirangerfjord on 31 August.

The crown prince’s embattled stepson was also reportedly uninvited from the high-profile wedding of Norwegian businessman Øystein Stray Spetalen’s son, after guests feared his presence would attract unwanted media attention.

Former motorcycle mechanic Høiby was arrested for the second time after he allegedly breached a restraining order granted to Rebecca and contacted her in the wake of the assault.

Høiby has denied the accusation.
