Marlin water systems temporarily change treatment to improve water quality

MARLIN, Texas (KWTX) – The city of Marlin said its public water system will temporarily convert the disinfectant used in the distribution system from chloramine to free chlorine.

The city says the transformation will start Nov. 1 and will continue through Nov. 30.

During this time, residents may experience changes in the taste or smell of their water, but the city says there is no need to boil your water.

The process can turn the water brown but “There is no health problem with consuming brown water as it is safe to drink, but the conversion alone can cause taste and odor problems so you may want to cook with store water if it affects your area” ,

Marlin says public water systems must disinfect their water and distribution systems. The city says they use chloramine, free chlorine with ammonia as a disinfectant.

“A temporary conversion to free chlorine, along with flushing activities, will help…improve the quality of your water overall,” the city says.

Marlin says this process is what they consider a deep clean and they try to do this twice a year.

The city also says there will be more hydrant flushing in November so residents should not be alarmed if they see running water on the streets.

Marlin is asking residents to share this information with those who may not have received this information and if residents have any questions, they should contact the water treatment staff at 254-883-3371.
