Mother of murdered students urges officials to believe abuse victims

The issue was raised in Parliament by Ms Jones MP Katie White.

The Labor MP for Leeds North West, said there needed to be changes in the way domestic violence was treated by society and a “cultural shift” to believing victims.

“At the moment, the onus is on the victims to prove they are in danger,” she said.

“It doesn’t work, obviously, and it didn’t work for Bethany, unfortunately.”

West Yorkshire Police said it accepted the findings of a domestic homicide review and an independent police investigation into Bethany’s death.

The force said the recommendations from those inquiries had been implemented and its approach to domestic abuse had “evolved and changed” in “many ways”.

“We have met with Bethany’s parents and apologized to them for our failures and the lost opportunities to protect their daughter,” the force said.

“While we are committed to continuous learning, we recognize that this will not bring back Bethany, who lost her life in truly horrific circumstances.”
