USM hosts the 18th annual Southern Miss Pow Wow Saturday

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – The University of Southern Mississippi is gearing up for an annual event showcasing traditional Native American culture.

“There will be vendors around selling Native American beads and crafts,” said Tammy Greer, director of the USM Center for American-Indian Research and Studies.

“There will be people showing off their Native American heritage, their regalia, their clothing, their beautiful handmade clothing, lots to do.”

The 18th Southern Miss Pow Wow will be held Saturday at Spirit Park. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m

It hosts the Center for American-Indian Research and Studies and the Golden Eagle Intertribal Society.

“It’s very important to show that First Nations are still here, but at the same time, it’s always great to educate others, especially students,” said Corey Eakes, a USM senior who is also president of the Golden Eagle Intertribal Society.

The event will include dancing, arts and crafts and a stickball tournament.

“We’ll especially have all these vendors, they’ll be teaching about different cultures, different tribes. We’ll have some that will have beads, will build mounds,” said Gerrett Isaac, secretary of the Golden Eagle Intertribal Society

Admission is free.
