Propane truck crashes, leak prompts evacuations near Marble | News

Update 19.00

Carbondale Fire & Rural Protection District Public Information Officer Jenny Cutright said the report by police that the propane truck ran into Crystal River was incorrect. The truck stopped on the slope before the river and there was no risk of water pollution.

“It’s not in the river, there’s no diesel (or propane) in the river. None of that is for any reason,” Cutright said.

The shelter in place was lifted around 5 p.m., and Cutright said the hope is to lift the evacuation order Friday night.

The truck — which is still leaking, Cutright said — will remain over the weekend and be removed on Monday.

Update 14.00

A press release from the Colorado State Patrol says County Road 3 is now allowing alternating traffic to pass.

The release also clarified that the driver of the vehicle was transported to “an area hospital for minor injuries sustained in the crash,” after initially reporting no injuries in the crash.

The truck is still leaking, “with an active leak vaporizing from the source.”

Residents within 1 mile of the area have been asked to evacuate.

Colorado Highway 133 through McClure Pass was reopened at 1:40 p.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Original story, 12:30 p.m

A propane truck overturned near Chair Mountain Ranch outside Marble is leaking propane onto the banks of the Crystal River and prompted a residential evacuation and a shelter in place Friday midday.

According to a Pitkin Alert issued at 12:02 a.m. Friday, a hazmat incident advised residents on Evergreen Lane, on the east side of Crystal River, to evacuate immediately, while residents on the west bank on Nub Street, Gulch Way, Alpine Street and Aspen Street was told to take shelter in place.

The propane truck rolled over on Gunnison County Road 3, which splits from Highway 133 before McClure Pass and heads toward Marble. No injuries were reported from the accident, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The road is closed from 133 to the 1.5 mile marker.

Gunnison County Sheriff Adam Murdie said the truck had crashed into the river and was “gassing” into it.

“They had a sizable tank of propane from gassing,” Murdie said. “Flammable gases in an accident like that, every now and then you even see on the news that it’s an explosion or something like that and I guess that’s why before the state patrol was even on the scene, they were the ones putting in the evacuation zone.”

Murdie added that they had deputies on scene within minutes of the incident.

The length of the closure period is not yet known.

Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District, Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office and CSP responded to the incident. By 12:30 p.m., CSP’s hazmat control team was on its way to the scene.

The Colorado Department of Transportation posted on Facebook at At 12:35 p.m., Colorado Highway 133 was closed between Redstone and Bull Mountain Road due to a “commercial vehicle fire.” CDOT said this came from internal on-scene reporting and was not accurate – the vehicle was not actively burning.
