Man charged after trying to smuggle 40 kilos of cannabis on flight to UK – CP24

A 21-year-old man is then charged with the crime Border agents reportedly found 40 kilos of cannabis hidden in his luggage at Pearson International Airport last month.

RCMP say the suspect arrived at the airport on October 21 and was scheduled to catch a flight to the UK that day.

But the RCMP say an outbound baggage check by the Canada Border Service Agency later led to the discovery of cannabis in his luggage.

RCMP then seized the cannabis and arrested the man.

The seized cannabis, according to police, is believed to have a street value of approximately $120,000.

“Reducing the flow of inbound and outbound cannabis is a priority for the RCMP Toronto Airport Detachment. Cannabis is decriminalized in Canada, but it is illegal to bring any amount of cannabis on international flights and amounts in excess of personal use, on domestic flights,” Insp .John McMath, of the RCMP’s Airport Detachment, said in a press release, “This case highlights the fact that if a passenger chooses to smuggle cannabis, felony drug smuggling charges will apply.”

Zubir Mahida, 21, is charged with exporting in contravention of section 11(2) thereof The Cannabis Act.

Police say people found guilty of importing cannabis into the UK can face up to 14 years in prison.

Mahida has been released on bail and will next appear in court on November 28.
