CBSE urges schools to update names under PM SHRI scheme on SARAS portal

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a new guideline inviting schools to apply online to add the prefix “PM SHRI” to their name. Schools eligible for this update can register under the “School Name Change” category on the CBSE SARAS portal when the online application link reopens in the next academic session from 2025-26.

Currently the SARAS portal is closed for this session but the board assures that schools will be able to apply once it becomes available.

The Board requires all schools applying for the PM SHRI prefix to upload an official approval letter issued by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to verify eligibility. Launched by the Government of India on September 7, 2022, the PM SHRI program aims to transform select schools into exemplary institutions by emphasizing quality education and equipping students with 21st century skills.

With a budget allocation of Rs 27,000 billion for five years, the PM SHRI initiative plans to improve 14,500 centrally managed and state government-run schools, including Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 targets.

The selected schools will set an example for the implementation of NEP 2020 across the country.
