Marietta and Warren volleyball teams prepare for OHSAA regional semifinals

WASHINGTON COUNTY, OH (WTAP) – The Marietta Tigers and Warren Warriors volleyball teams have reached the OHSAA regional semifinals after both teams claimed victories in both of their districts.

The Warriors are coming off a 4-set win against Circleville to win the Southeast District in Region 15. This is their first district title since 1999

Warren will enter its regional semifinal game against the Meadowbrook Colts at Pickerington North.

Ann Skufca, the Warriors head coach, said the keys are taking it one game at a time and taking the Colts as serious competition.

“We definitely take Meadowbrook very seriously,” Skufca said. “It’s a high-level game going into the regional semifinals and we’re not taking them lightly. We’re preparing every point, every step.”

The players have also taken the Colts seriously as they continue to improve their skills.

“I think our communication is key in this game because they’re a little bit of a shorter team,” senior Madyson Long said “They’re really going to try to hit us in spots where it’s tough.”

“We got our skills down a little bit,” senior Sarah Pettey said. “It’s kind of refining our skills just a little bit, and then it’s been a lot of film and watching the teams we play and their tendencies.”

The Marietta Tigers, meanwhile, also won their Region 11 district title against Dover in a 3-set sweep, which they would repeat from last year.

The Tigers will head to Lakewood when they take on the Bishop Watterson Eagles.

Ron Kidder, the head coach of the Tigers, said his team had been working all week against a superior Eagles team.

“We have to be able to pass the ball and serve,” Ridder said. “Obviously, we’ve got to make sure they can’t get into the system all the time because they get into the system, they can hit the ball. They got an outside hitter committed to Ohio State, and they got great size. So we’ve got to play really Good.”

The players for the Tigers agree that serving and defense are top priorities to win.

“A lot of serving,” Arianna Buckley said. “We know they have a lot of tall girls, so I think defense will be key for us and passing and serving.”

“Watch film and see what they’re doing and kind of fix what we’re doing for them, but also just play our game, play Marietta volleyball,” senior Anna Ritter said.

The Marietta Tigers will face Bishop Watterson at 6:00 pm at Lakewood High School on October 31st.

The Warren Warriors will also be in action on the 31st when they travel to Pickerington North to face the Meadowbrook Colts at 8pm
